COURSE DESCRIPTION:   Spanish II reinforces proficiency in using grammatical structures and vocabulary from Spanish I.  In addition, this is an intense grammar course that introduces many new grammatical concepts.  Writing, reading, speaking and listening in Spanish will be emphasized.  Minimum grade of “C” in Spanish I recommended.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  The objectives of Spanish II correlate with the Oklahoma State Department of Education Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS).  There are five overarching goals in Oklahoma’s rigorous curriculum framework:  The students will communicate in Spanish, gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures, connect with other disciplines, develop insight into the nature of language and cultures by making comparisons, and participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.

TIMELINE:

August:  (Lección Preliminar) Review Basic Vocabulary and Grammar from Spanish I
September/October: Unidad 1
            -Culture: Costa Rica
-Vocabulary: Going on a trip, On vacation
-Grammar: Direct object pronouns, Indirect object pronouns, Preterite of –ar verbs, Preterite of ir, ser, hacer, ver, dar
November/December: Unidad 2
            -Culture: Argentina
-Vocabulary: Sports and Health, Daily Routines
-Grammar: Preterite of –er and –ir verbs, Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, Reflexive verbs; Present progressive
January/February: Unidad 3
            -Culture: Puerto Rico
-Vocabulary: Clothes and shopping, At the market
-Grammar: Present tense of irregular yo verbs, pronouns after prepositions, Preterite of   –ir stem-changing verbs; Irregular preterite verbs.
March/April: Unidad 4
            -Culture: México
            -Vocabulary: Legends and stories, Past and Present
-Grammar: The imperfect tense, Preterite and imperfect used together, Preterite of –car-gar, -zar verbs, More verbs with irregular preterite stems.
May: Cumulative Project



MATERIALS:
            -¡Avancemos! Textbook (provided and kept at home)
            -¡Avancemos! Consumable Workbook (provided)
            -3 Ring Binder (preferably ½ inch)
-6 Tabbed Dividers labeled: VOCABULARIO, ODER, APUNTES, CUADERNO, MUSICA, and TAREAS REVISADAS
            -Notebook paper
            -pencil
            -red grading pen

GRADING POLICY: Grades will be averaged based on a “total point” system.  Generally, tests, quizzes and projects are worth approximately 50% of your grade.  The rest is determined by daily class work, homework and participation.

GRADE ACCESS:
All students will have access to viewing their grades online at any time by logging into the Mustang Public Schools website and entering their user information.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND GUIDELINES:
-TREAT OTHERS WITH COURTESY AND RESPECT
-Be in your seat with all your materials when the bell rings
-Turn in neat, legible assignments when they are due.
-No lining up at the door before the bell rings.  (You must wait until you hear me say, “Have a nice day! (¡Buen día!”)
-LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED as follows:   You will receive 2 “Late Homework Passes” per semester.  They may be used for full credit, but after these are used, I will not accept late work; you will receive a zero.
-Make-up work for excused absences is completely your responsibility.  Each day’s assignment can be found in the binder on the table in the front of the room.  Students will be able to make-up quizzes/tests up to one week after the date missed.  Please make sure that you make an appointment with me to make it up! 
-Passing time between classes is 5 minutes.  This is plenty of time to use the bathroom and still arrive to class on time.  If you need to leave class for an emergency, you must sign the student pass log on the cabinet door before you leave the room. 
-NO FOOD OR DRINKS other than water allowed in class.

Students please feel free to talk to me anytime you have any problems.  Upper level Spanish students will be available for tutoring upon request.
